Dear Homo Sapiens, There is no need to continue reading this page. What follows is intended for search engine robots and spiders and not necessarily for human beings. Further information concerning crewed yacht charter sailing in the eastern Mediterranean may be obtained by clicking on the blue links immediately above. Thank You. You must be searching for the Tuscan-born classical singer Andrea Bocelli! You heard his rendition of Because We Believe closing the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics! And liked it enough to do a little research! Well, you've come to the wrong place. This is not a Bocelli web page. Neither is this a web page dealing with the Genovese admiral Andrea Doria. The admiral once a papal guard. That was before he was an admiral, of course. The pope had no admirals in his papal guard, not then, not in the five years ending with Christopher Columbus in the West Indies. Admiral Columbus. That was 1492, and it was an achievement by another Genovese which must have started Andrea Doria thinking, thinking about admirals, about the sea, about sailing the eastern Mediterranean. There were four Greek brothers from the island of Lesbos then also thinking about sailing the eastern Mediterranean. The Barbarossa brothers! While the Barbarossas got their sea legs on swift galliots with eighteen to twenty-two oars to a side, Andrea Doria served with the Knights of Rhodes. And when he wasn't on pilgrimage to the Holy Land he may have served on one or another of the Knights' large red-hulled black-prowed galleys hunting infidels at sea. Yes, that's right, you guessed. The Barbarossa brothers were in the same waters also hunting infidels at sea. Fortunately for both, there were lots of infidels, Muslim infidels hunted by the Knights and Latin infidels hunted by the Barbarossas. What were Greek Barbarossas doing hunting Latin infidels? Well, these offspring of a mother the widow of an Orthodox priest and of a father once a conscripted janissary in service to Mehmet The Conqueror were raised as Muslims, their father's faith after conscription. As was the custom of the time, however, their two sisters were raised in the mother's faith. That being neither here nor there, neither faith, Muslim nor Orthodox, was Latin, and because Latins, particularly Genovese, over two and a half centuries had plundered the island of Lesbos while other Latins were setting up shop elsewhere in the Aegean, the Barbarossas were raised on a fair dose of Latin-loathing. Meanwhile, that is to say, in time Andrea Doria returned to Genoa then a French possession and entered the service of Louis XII. As an admiral! Finally! He was in this abbreviated history to later become an admiral in service to the Latin Republic of Venice, as well, and still later to command the Papal galley fleet at the 1538 Battle of Preveza. He had come full circle, from papal guard to papal admiral. But at Preveza he was to encounter the last and greatest of the Barbarossa brothers, Kheir-ed-Din, Kapudan-i Derya or Grand Admiral of the Ottoman Navy, and Kheir-ed-Din's galleys got the better of things. Preveza was Andrea Doria's swan song (not Andrea Bocelli's swan song) as he then retired to Genoa and never again encountered the Ottoman Navy. Kheir-ed-Din Barbarossa was to continue sailing the eastern Mediterranean until his death from natural causes in 1546. Should you be wondering about Preveza, a Greek town on the Ionian Sea, it was formerly known as Actium. And it was to Actium that Antony and Cleopatra repaired in 31 BC. There Antony, hoping to become Caesar Augustus, met Octavian, who did become Caesar Augustus, in still another galley battle. Could you be thinking of sailing the eastern Mediterranean, sailing this same crossroads of history? Why not do it aboard Andrea, no relation to Andrea Bocelli or to Andrea Doria, but rather a Ted Irwin designed sailing ketch with accommodations for six guests.
