Turquoise Coast Holiday. Gordon is a superb captain and knowledgeable tour guide, and Wilma is every bit a first mate and executive chef. The TGE with its handsome teak deck and spacious guest quarters is one heck of a taxi down the Lycian coast! We weren't sailors when we started, we're not sailors now (though Gordon has bestowed on us the title "Honorary Heralds Of The TGE"), but there's no better way to explore the Turkish coast to get a real sense of its charming ports and to explore ancient history than with Gordon and crew aboard the TGE. Michael Cippoletti, San Francisco, California, April 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. Beautiful boat, beautiful waters. Amazing trip! Gordon will teach you how to find the sweet spot between the sails and tell stories of Cleopatra and Alexander The Great. Wilma will translate it all into seven languages while preparing delicious salads and pastries. Looking forward to our next trip. Peter and Shannon Brigham-Hill, Washington, D.C., May 2002

Turquoise Coast Holiday. Seven fascinating days - we explored ancient sites with a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic Gordon - we even found things that Gordon hadn't seen before. Great boat, beautiful area made for sailing. Will go home and study ancient history and come back - thank you Gordon and Wilma (mate and great cook). Michael Keyes, Point Shares, Bermuda, May 2002

Turquoise Coast Holiday. Perfect balance of relaxing sailing along this picturesque coast and energetic hikes to explore ancient sites and other points of interest. On land our skeely (sic) skipper became an enthusiastic and informative antiquarian. Wilma's onboard gourmet breakfasts and lunches were rivaled only by our evening "eat-out" stops at coves and villages. Aisla Keyes, Point Shares, Bermuda, May 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. Idyllic days sailing and sightseeing on a real sailboat with a real sailor. Gordon's encyclopedic knowledge of the Gulf of Fethiye and broader history was a bonus as were Wilma's breakfasts and lunches. Alec Brennan, Greenwich, New South Wales, May 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. Loved the trip - except for the tilt! Great company and I really enjoyed the hikes with Gordon to see sites of historical interest. Lovely boat. Can't beat that teak Charter Sailing Holidaydecking! Thanks, Gordon and Wilma. Liz Brennan, Greenwich, New South Wales, May 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. A wonderful few days enjoying all the scenery, history and food that the the Gulf has to offer. Thank you! Nick Brennan, Greenwich, New South Wales, May 2002

Greece And Turkey At Once. Back in Gocek after a superb week of sailing again aboard T.G. Ellyson. All in all, it was perfect: sun, good weather, returned to bays visited on prior TGE voyages - and this time Gordon added two new bays plus Rodos to our itinerary. Will be back for a seventh time this fall if at all possible. One of my best holidays. I depart with my batteries fully charged thanks to Gordon, Wilma, the TGE, and Turkey. Howdy Hilderbrand, Geneva, June 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. A superb week cruising the Gulf of Fethiye with Gordon and Jenny. We arrived in a heat wave which continued throughout the week. This didn't dampen our spirit but we did consume vast quantities of liquids. Gordon led us to some fascinating ruins and explained the historical context superbly. We truly felt we were walking in the footsteps of Antony and Cleopatra. Excellent food and company made for an enjoyable week. Simon Lunn, Ashford, Kent, July 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. Thank you for a great time. (with xxxx's) Emily Lunn, Ashford, Kent, July 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. Thank you Gordon and Jenny for a great trip. It was very hot but Charter Sailing Holidaywe went swimming a lot to cool us down. My favorite bay was Wall Bay because it was good for snorkeling. Thank you. Sophie Lunn, Ashford, Kent, July 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. I really enjoyed our trip on T.G. Ellyson. It was very hot so we did lots and lots of swimming. We visited lots of pretty bays and went on tiring but interesting treks to see ancient ruins. The sailing was good but there was not always much wind. The food was excellent. All in all I had a brilliant time. (with xxxx's) Jessica Lunn, Ashford, Kent, July 2002

Flat-Water Sailing Holiday. A fun time had by all. Alison Bonner, Ashford, Kent, July 2002

Greece And Turkey At Once. All of the events leading to our first outing on the TGE, including wedding and secret honeymoon, ensured I would arrive a frayed bundle of nerves. I desperately wished to be done with decisions. Now that we are about to sit down to our final dinner with Gordon and Isabelle, I am going to quite proudly say that I have managed to plan a truly idyllic honeymoon by more or less subjugating our comings and goings to Gordon's best judgement. I am confident Valerie's expectations have been surpassed. I feel Gordon has shown us places we would never have otherwise seen, all the while explaining their history. He has made sure we have sampled the best each restaurant had to offer, and dropped us off each night in a blissfully worry-free state. It's easy to imagine spending much more time with Gordon and visiting many more places in the future. Many Thanks, Robbie Goffin, Toronto and New York City, August 2002

Greece And Turkey At Once. Our captain provided more than the relaxation we had Charter Sailing
Honeymoon Greeceanticipated. He acquainted us with local customs and culture and with loads of history. And the humor beneath his stern seaman's exterior kept us smiling the whole time. Isabelle was delightful and welcoming. She made sure our every wish was satisfied. Our honeymoon far surpassed expectations. I can't wait to spread the word. Valerie Goffin, Minneapolis and New York City, August 2002

Greece And Turkey At Once. Merci Gordon. Une experience a repeter. Isabelle Outin, Paris, August 2002

Cruising Greece's Forgotten Islands In Saint Paul's Wake. Dear Gordon, The Weaver family will never forget our fabulous week aboard the T.G. Ellyson. Every day was perfect: new ports of call, shimmering clear water in which to swim, drinks at sunset, ruins to explore, hiking, climbing, and of course the daily search for the perfect octopus salad. Best of all was getting to know you and Annie, share our experiences and laugh together at all our seaborne quirks! Thanks so much for sharing all your yachting knowledge and for taking the five Weavers on a terrific vacation. We'll be back! Love, Susan, Michael, Nick, Ceci, and Winn. Susan Weaver, New York City, August 2002

Cruising Greece's Forgotten Islands In Saint Paul's Wake. Dear Gordon, My family and I have had a wonderful time aboard the T.G. Ellyson. I couldn't ask for a better bridge partner. Our week has gone by too quickly because of the fun we've had. Thank you very much. Ceci Weaver, New York City, August 2002

Cruising Greece's Forgotten Islands In Saint Paul's Wake. Dear Gordon, Thank you so much for taking us on our wonderful voyage through the Greek islands. The TGE is a beautiful boat, worthy of these beautiful locales. Thank you for all the great times. Winn Jewett, New York City, August 2002

Cruising Greece's Forgotten Islands In Saint Paul's Wake. Gordon, Family vacations are by definition special times - BUT - the TGE and our travels with you speak of memories for all of us we should never forget - FANTASTIC. Thank you for what all five of us will treasure. Michael Weaver, New York City, August 2002

Cruising Greece's Forgotten Islands In Saint Paul's Wake. (Nicholas Weaver made no log entry but did ask whether heAegean Sailing
Holiday might return as crew in 2004.)

Greece And Turkey At Once. We from South Carolina always enjoy a good time and good hospitality. Gordon and Annie provided both. In addition we've seen sights that we will always remember. For future travelers we might suggest that they get their balance in tip top shape - which has been an adjustment for those of us over six feet. The other bit of advice is to try to bring too little rather than too much. This boat is a T-shirt, bathing suit, and barefoot experience. Enjoy as we have. Jane and Bob Davidson, Columbia, South Carolina, September 2002

Greece And Turkey At Once. There were many wonderful sights and ruins to see! Bring your hiking shoes. This is also a trip for real sailors. Quite an experience! Thanks to Gordon and Annie. Walter and Carole Gunter, Columbia, South Carolina, September 2002

Greece And Turkey At Once. "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dieing of the light." Thanks for having me aboard Gordon! Annie Lyons, Paris, September 2002

One of the more interesting early explorers of southern Turkey was Edward Forbes, a Scot born on the Isle of Man in 1815 at the close of the Napoleonic wars. Early in life he developed an appreciation for natural history furthered as a student and later a professor at the University of Edinburgh. Aboard H.M.S. Beacon he arrived at Naussa, Paros, in 1841 and commenced surveying and charting the Cyclades and Dodecanese (the chart of Kos, Nesiros, and Tilos at the right but one example) in conjunction with study of marine life. Later that year he proceeded aboard Beacon to the Lycian coast at ancient Patara for the purpose of assisting Charles Fellows in removal of the Xanthian Marbles which then did not yet include the Ionic Trophy Monument, sometimes known as the Nereid Monument, now in the British Museum. It was while Forbes was at Xanthos that Fellows discovered the Ionic Trophy Monument, and Forbes participated in its recovery. He returned to the valley of the Xanthos in the following year with Thomas Spratt and undertook an extensive exploration re-locating eighteen ancient Lycian cities described in their 1849 study Travels In Lycia, Milyas and the Cibyratis.
